Royal College of Art creates sustainable auto concepts

To celebrate forty years in business, the Royal College of Art's fourteen graduates this year have undertaken the challenge of designing a future eco-friendly car for the 2008 Pilkington Automotive Vehicle Design award. Of course, some of the concepts are pretty far "out there," though others, like Sergio Loureiro Da Silva's Phoenix concept actually seem plausible. The Phoenix is a bit of a mixture of a motorcycle with sidecar and a normal four-wheeled automobile; it looks awfully futuristic. Pierre Sabas won the competition with his Airflow concept, which features electric motors directly integrated into the wheels. This technique is currently being explored by multiple companies for production cars, so the design doesn't seem to stray too far from reality.

The Nereus concept by Ceri Yorath, on the other hand, strays a bit from normality with its fuel cell powertrain and transformable body panels, which shape themselves based on how you are driving. Still, Jung Hoon Rhee's Noah concept seems the furthest from reality, as its "wave seats" were meant to "duplicate the lightness of being immersed in water." Right. Take a look at all of the concepts in our gallery below. Thanks for the tip, Mike!

Video: iMiEV has wind turbine in the grill, solar panel on the roof

Filed under: EV/Plug-in, Mitsubishi, Tokyo Motor Show, Green Daily

iMiev

I think we have a winner for the greenest car at the 2007 Tokyo Motor Show. Below the fold is a video all about the Mitsubishi iMiEV Sport concept. It's a plug-in electric car with a cool tear drop shape and a number of cool ways of charging the batteries. The iMiEV's lithium-ion batteries can be charged via a wireless microwave charger in your garage floor which means you don't have to struggle to plug it in.

Not keen on turning your garage in a giant microwave? Don't worry, the iMiEV has solar panels on the roof and micro wind turbines in the front grill. The iMiEV has other strange features like the ability to connect to your computer, in-hub motors and an electric plug that flips open. BTW I think the way you say the car's name is eye My EV, which also gives iMiEV our award for strangest car name at the 2007 Tokyo Motor Show.

Filed under: EV/Plug-in, Nissan, Tokyo Motor Show

Nissan concepts

Below the fold are two videos by Nissan released for the 2007 Tokyo Motor Show. The first video shows the making of the electric concept car, the Pivo 2 and has a quick chat with Tomoko Sato and Mariecamill Lecoq, two Japanese and French designers of the car.

The second video includes the making of the RDBX, a car a lot like the Mixim, which is going after the youth market with large, media displays. The 2007 Tokyo Motor Show runs through November 11th and opens to the public from October 27th.

Citroën's C-Métisse concept car photos and specifications

Citroën calls their newest concept car, the C-Métisse, "out of this world", and a sleek look with a 45 mpg rating is certainly a rarity here on Earth. Featuring both rear and front gull-wing doors, the C-Métisse features a HDi V6 diesel engine, coupled with a diesel particulate filter system, and two separate electric motors on the rear wheels, which are capable of developing 400Nm of additional torque. The best news for green car enthusiasts is that the C-Métisse can drive "around town" in Zero Emission Vehicle (ZEV) mode (no details on exactly how far or quickly driving around town means). 0-62 mph takes the C-Métisse 6.2 seconds, and the car features a 'boost' function that activates combines the torque of the combustion engine with that of the electric motors to enhance performance without pushing up fuel consumption. The diesel-hybrid engine also has regenerative braking. You can see more pictures and read the entire press release after the jump.
