Next-gen Prius gets a new logo

Filed under: Hybrid, Toyota, Detroit Auto Show

Toyota's got a lot of Prius fans salivating at the thought of its third-gen fuel-saver being introduced in January at the Detroit Auto Show, and it's doing its part to keep those juices flowing by releasing the first official shot of the '10 Prius. It's um, nice... but doesn't show off too much skin. In fact, it's nothing more than a new logo, and it's obviously a bit of a let-down to the hard-core fans among the internet. We think that this may be the splash screen displayed on the e-dash upon startup. Our Autoblog siblings see some Knight Rider influence in the font, and we have to agree after checking it out ourselves. We do know that the new Prius will be a bit sportier overall, and the chosen font seems to back that up. We need to find a way to get the theme from Star Trek: The Next Generation to play at the same time. Any comments? Thanks for the tip, Danny!

Honda's hybrid-only model will hit in April 2009

Filed under: Hybrid, Honda, Paris Motor Show

What looks like a Prius, sips gas like a Prius, comes from Japan like a Prius... but isn't a Prius? That would be Honda's upcoming dedicated hybrid (which this particular blogger thinks should be called the Insight, but won't be). We are expecting the production version of the new model, of which we have seen these spy shots, to debut this October in the City of Lights, Paris. Thanks to the use of a refined and less-costly version of Honda Integrated Motor Assist along with a 1.3-liter gas-burner, the new hybrid model should attain fuel mileage in the 50-60 mpg range, matching what's expected from the next-gen Prius that should be unveiled January in Detroit in January.

We are pretty excited to see this new hybrid rivalry go into full swing, with Toyota's incumbent model in its third generation and Honda finally offering a four-door dedicated hybrid. The Honda should come in at a slightly more attractive price but will also be a bit smaller than the Toyota. Both will use nickel-based batteries, eschewing the newer but pricier lithium ions that will likely take over in a few years. The Honda should finally see the light of day in April of 2009 and the automaker hopes to sell half of the 200,000 it plans to produce in the U.S.

Rendered Speculation: 2010 Toyota Prius

Filed under: Hybrid, Toyota, Detroit Auto Show

The new 2010 Toyota Prius will be unveiled at the Detroit Auto Show next January along with a Lexus badged derivative. When the third (or fourth depending on whether you count the original U.S. model as a second gen) Prius debuts it will retain the current hybrid setup with a nickel metal hydride battery pack. The gas engine is expected to be updated and grow from the current 1.5L to 1.6L. The five door hatchback body style is also expected to grow a bit although the fuel economy is not expected to suffer. If the rendering produced by Car and Driver is anything to go by, not much of the new Prius design will come from the Hybrid-X concept that Toyota showed at the 2007 Geneva Motor Show. In 2010, Toyota will start building a few hundred Priuses with lithium ion batteries and plug-in capability for commercial and government fleet testing. A high volume retail version won't appear until 2011-12.

Toyota clarifies Detroit '09 hybrid intro plans, no third model

Filed under: Hybrid, Lexus, Toyota, Detroit Auto Show

Toyota has issued a clarification to reports earlier this week that it would introduce a third dedicated hybrid model in January at the Detroit Auto Show. At this year's show company president Katsuoko Watanabe announced that the company would bring two all new hybrid-only models to the 2009 show one each for Lexus and Toyota. That is all Toyota will unveil in Detroit. There will not be a third new hybrid. One of the new cars will be the new Prius. An additional model remains a possibility for introduction at some other show. This could either be a larger car or it might be the plug-in Prius that will debut in 2010 for fleet testing use.
